I have a trans leak at the shift rod on the back of the trans. Must the trans be removed to fix the leak/ seal

There is an o-ring seal that goes in there. It MAY be possible to pull the swing arm and have enough room to work but I kind of doubt it. I've always pulled the trans and checked u-joint & carrier bearing, clutch plates etc... You may also find that the shift shaft or the case is worn and putting in a new seal may be a temporary or a no fix deal.

There is a way to do what is called "crabbing" the frame so you don't have to pull engine also, saves a lot of time. There are pages on this forum with pictures (if I remember) that show how to do it. It's not hard just takes time.

Any Guzzi dealers near by?

You have to pull the transmission. The shift pawl must be removed to replace the o-ring, and teh back cover of the transmission must be removed to get the shift pawl. See transmission posts on how to pull in down, I believe they are available at http://www.thisoldtractor.com/guzzitech ... ctures.htm. When you have the trans out, check everything. New seals and o-rings everywhere. Do the clutch and rear main too if the clutch has over 50K miles, other wise you will be back in again soon.
