Transmission free play

Trying to explain in my bad english...

Could you please help me?
I'm a bit worried about the free play in my transmission line; it seems so big.

Please help me to define what is "normal" by placing your Stelvio on the center stand, put in first gear and rotate the wheel in the free play area making the measure on the edge of the rim (near the tyre). On my machine the free play is a bit more than 1½"

The gearbox is what is known as a 'Constant Mesh' type. All the pinnions are engaged together all the time. Which one delivers power to the shafts is chosen by dogs engaging with the pinions and locking a pinion to the shaft. The backlash you are feeling is between the dogs, not between the gears and is perfectly normal.

If you want to see really horrific backlash find someone with a Carbed 1100 Sport and feel the backlash in their gearboxes! Depending on gear selected it can be anything up to 60 degrees of wheel rotation!!!!! They on;ly use a 3 dog engagement system!

It's important for me to know what's normal and I really don't like the "clonk" when I get on the throttle for example after braking.

On my latest BMW the play was much bigger and on former Guzzis (5 speed, non-CARC) it was much smaller...
 
Make sure you have taken as much free play out of both the opening and closing throttle cables as possible, this has a profound effect, although I haven't yet found anyone who has given a truly satisfactory explanation of why! :laugh: . Also make sure your throttle bodies are ballanced properly and the TPS is set correctly.

Good tips and already done ;-)
And good throttle control is one important bit of the thing, made easier with small free play.
When my warranty expires, I will by "poor mans Axone"...

At the risk of looking foolish, I haven't found a throttle cable adjustment. Any guidance?
 
Piece of cake, didn't even need the Vasoline. I can't believed I missed the adjusters, they're well camoflaged , I guess.
