Hello everyone,

I am new to the site.

I am living in Germany and right now I am about to buy a very decent 1972 Moto Guzzi 850 Eldorado. The seller is a German collector who provided quite some information about the bikes history to me including that the bike startet its life as a CHP bike in the 70s. The frame number and engine number are identical so that would be the first sign that the story might be correct as far as i know.

Now comes the difficult part. The first zivilian owner was a very old german guy who bought it back when he still lived in California. The man is not around any more. Anyway the took the bike with him when he returned to Germany in the early 90s. Unfortunatelly he decided to make a California version out of the ex Eldorado, so solo seat, suitcases, sirene all that is long gone! :-( still has the factory paint on it though. He also missed that you can retreive the US title when you register a German title on an import vehicle so that is gone as well.

I alleady contacted Moto Guzzi Mandello if they have any information about which VINs has been delivered to which CHP units back then. Answer is pending.

I would like to ask you guys if there are:
a) ways to connect a certain classic bike VIN to an ex CHP usage? Like inventory lists or something like that?
b) is there a chance that the US title or other infos about the bikes life are still around in the US?

Thanks a lot!

Hello SirKeppa,

Welcome and congratulations of your " Find" !

I am imagining that CarFax ( and things like it ) get their information from the Department of Motor Vehicles to compile their reports, so the information about when and to whom a vehicle / bike was first registered and all its subsequent owners is probably out there somewhere - but how an individual would get it is beyond me :)

Googleing " Motorcycle VIN Search" returned an bunch of links - but who know which might actually get you something usefull.

Good luck in your Search / Investigation !

Hello,

In truth, it has been so long and those motorcycles have changed hands so many times that you will never discover it’s true origin and history.

Unless you find and pay $$$$$ for a motorcycle with a verified provenance, what difference does it really make?

If you do a search on Greg Benders site there is a Loopframe list with VIN & engine numbers and where they are in USA. It goes all the way back to 1966 when they first came out with the V700. May not have your motor number in list but may have similar to yours if bought in USA. I worked on Loops that had a 'P' after the motor number. They were black & white & some had the original fairing in black & white. They were civilian models w/dual dash & footpegs not floorboards. They had a key on the dash not on the side. They were for Chicago police not California. Hope this helps.
