My '99 EV cuts out at around 4K RPM, but will accelerat strongly. Interestinly, if I cut the ignition for maybe 20 seconds and then turn it back on, it smooths out. Does anyone have any idea what's going on here?

Thanks,
Roger

Is this only when the bike has run for awhile? After the 20 seconds off, does it occur again in less time than the first?

John---yes, this is only after the bike has been running for a while, usually at least 30 minutes. Sometimes it will recur in less time during the same ride, and sometimes not.

It may be an ignition coil breaking down after it gets hot. If you know the side that is cutting out, try swapping coils and see if it goes to the other side. That will confirm the coil theory and isolate the defective one. If it doesn't, then it is a common component to both coils.

It feels like the bike is very briefly shutting down altogether, like pulsing the kill switch, rather than one side or the other missing. But I agree that something could be failing once it gets hot. What stands out for me is that turning the ignition off and on seems to clear the fault, at least for a while. Yesterday, I pulled out the flywheel sensor and found a couple of metal shavings about the size of fingernail clippings on the magnetic tip of the sensor, which was also a little dirty. I cleaned it off and went for a short ride into town (talking to a boat hardware shop about making an extension for my tail rack). The bike seemed to run better (but then washing it seems to make it run better, too). I need to take a longer ride to see if this was really the problem. Another person suggested that I wire a test light into each coil and zip tie the lights to the bars so I can see if a coil is faltering. If the behavior continues, I might give that a try.

Had kind of similar on my Sporti. It would start once the engine was hot, then if I tried opening the throttle, it would hit a wall about 5k, acting as if the ignition had been cut and as it got hotter the rev ceiling would get lower and lower. I was starting to think it was the Cam position sensor, but as the fuel pump was groaning, I swapped out the fuel filter and then the pump which sorted it.

I had a cutting out problem on my sport corsa still not 100% sure what it was but ended up with new relays, TPS ,cleaned the fuel system out and changed ht leads and plug caps then got bike set up running a touch richer .Lucky for me this sorted the problem .
If it was my bike I would start with the easy fixes first, best of luck
