V11 Lemans Motor in LM3 Frame (?)

All: I've been trying to source an 1100 Sport motor in Seattle but have not had much luck. Thought I'd check in here on some parameters and assumptions to widen the search, as I'm a relative Guzzi newbie (coming on 1 year since my first Guzzi):

(1) Although widely available, California motors have soft rods, small valves and low compression. So not suitable for sustained revs and making power for track use. True?

(2) Have seen a couple of V11 Lemans motors for sale but, assuming timing cover is swapped, will they bolt-up to LM3 frame and transmission?

(3) What do you do about lack of distributor? Machine case? Aftermarket ignition available sans distributor?

(4) Actually, is the V11 Lemans motor a good candidate for track use. What weaknesses? What are best mods for reliability? Please comment.

Your invaluable advice much appreciated. Thanks, again.

A Cali motor would give you 60-65 hp. A V11 70-75hp.

Tuned V11 motor can give 80-85 and with a timing cover swap will bolt right up to frame and tranny. Just trim the timing cover fins where it meets the V11 wide sump.

I've done the swap.

Crank fired ignitions are readily available. Saches, Silent Hektic etc.

The V11 is a good start. For serious racing use Carrillo rods, steel pushrods and a good cam.Twin plugging can give 3-4 hp and extend power up top.

The stock motor would be fine as long as you keep the rev limit to 7500rpm.

Thank You, Guzzigray. Your reassurances appreciated. I think the cost-(don't laugh too hard)-benefit of starting with the bigger 1100 motor instead of building up the LM3 mill will prove out ultimately. Indeed, the idea came exactly from reading your blog! First big step, and many to go in this build. Its going to take a couple of seasons, minimum. Please bear with me as it is going to be one stupid question after another...

Just sent a check to Mark at Moto Guzzi Classics for a 2002 V11 LeMans motor and I'm using pick-up as an excuse to attend the AHMRA races at Willow Springs April 26-28. Bloody long drive from Seattle but hope to see many west coast Guzzi racebikes in action, especially your endurance kit.

Best,
JL

Interesting ... did the timing cover swap applies to any big block engine or is there any crankshaft-length/alternator compatibility issue?

Note: I still couldn't found any (stainless)steel pushrods!

Nobody here - in France - seem to have ever heared about any such thing.?!

The V11/Sport and Tonti timing covers are interchangeable. Just use the appropriate seal where the crank passes through. On my race bike I use a Tonti cover on a Sport 1100 engine. The crank seal is for the Sport 1100 crank.

Tonti and Sport seals have the same outside diameter, different inside diameter to allow for different crank nose size difference.

Hope i haven't over-explained this :)

Contact Moto Bel in Paris for pushrods. They are a big Guzzi dealer and run a very successful Guzzi racer.
