My 98 v11ev no longer counts revs. Per other posts, I've checked the ground and tiny springs after prying open the case. No problems there. Does anyone know what kind of signal should be coming from the ecu? Other suggestions appreciated too.

It gets a 5 volt pulse from the ECU. The frequency of the pulse relates to the RPM readout. An oscilloscope on the signal wire to the tach will tell you if the signal is being sent.

After answering your question, it is not uncommon for the 98 tachs to fail. Just replace it. It would cost more to fix the one you have.

I don't know if the 98's had this issue but my first guzzi a 2000 EV
had a non working tach. Turned out to be a bad ground wire in the wire harness on the right side of the bike by the headset behind the cover. I ran the bike and gently worked the harness saw the tach spring to life, from that point on i just had to track it down.
If memory serves it was a brown wire and one of the worst factory connections i have seen.

Hi , I am new to GUZZIs but bought a 1999 Cali 1100i with a tacho that does not work.

I also opened it up and found that the small moving coil - just above the hair springs - that moves back and forth with the needle - was open circuit .

If you are that far in then well done - just undo the 2 screws that hold the magnet and coil - after unsoldering the springs - and put a meter across the 2 tags under the facia which are the tags that the coil solders to .

you should get about 160 ohms - mine was open circuit

I then ordered a small reel of wire . 00275" or .063mm and rewound it -take care soldering and mine is fine - Phew

as long as you have 12v an earth and a pulse coming up from the coil you are fine - you can use a meter on dwell and see if it pulses - this confirms the pulse coming from the coil
