Well... it won't start!

At first there was no spark and no gas in the cylinders/on the spark plugs.
I cleaned the (very dirty) carbs, dusted of the ignition, points, cleaned the fuses/fuse rack, rinsed out the tank.

Nothing. At one point a very low puff-puff for something like 2-3 seconds, but no real PUFF!

I measured the compression 171 and 158, which seems OK to me...?

Plugs are new, and they get gas/wet when cranking the engine. After the clean up, I get nice, fat sparks on both sides.

I set the ignition timing as per manual (the simple way, not with a timing gun thingy). I had the top caps of the cylinder, to make sure I was at TDC when doing the timing. I think I got it pretty good.

Oh Guzzi Lords... What can I do? What am I doing wrong? Any common mistakes? Any ideas?

Double check the timing. Also make sure the idle circuits are clean in the carbs. Also if the bike is equipped with enriching jets, be sure the circuit is correct. I've resurrected a few machines that have sat for years. They can be troublesome. You just have to work each system until they work together and the bike runs.

What John suggested & to maybe give you a starting point: pull the plugs put a little gas in each cylinder, replace plugs and see if it starts if it does, it's you carbs, been down the same road with a V65
Don't give up!

As I used to tell my customers. If it has fuel, compression and spark that is timed correctly it has to start according the laws of physics. One of those is missing. Since you say it has these I am agreeing with John that I would check the timing. You say there is gas on the plugs and your compression numbers should run. I am not familiar with the setup of the ignition on a V35 but is it possible the timing is on the exhaust TDC instead of the compression TDC or is there a waste spark so it doesn't matter.

no waste spark.
