Ciao a tutti, I'm Dom in London got a big problem with my 1986 v65 sp. Today while riding home it sounded different followed by a bit of smoke, when I stopped to investigate I found the left spark plug nearly totally unscrewed.
That particular one felt tricky since I've had the bike, I suppose sometime in the past its been cross threaded or such and maybe retreaded which I supposed it has made the sparkie housing bigger at the same time. Has anybody in this forum ever had or heard of a similar problem and can suggest a cheap alternative to just replacing the head? I'll thank you all in advance

The thread can be repaired. Proper repair requires removal of the the head, and an insert installed from the combustion chamber side. Any automotive machine shop should be able to install the insert. If you aren't mechanically inclined, have a good shop remove the head, take it to a machine shop, then install the head for you.

On this side of the pond these inserts are known as Helicoils, FWIW!

Tony,

A helicoil isn't a good idea in this application. The repair I'm talking about is more like a time sert. There will be a ridge inside the chamber that will retain the new threads. The head needs to be machined so the ridge is flush. That way combustion pressure won't push the piece out.

Apparently time sert makes a kit for repair from the outside, but I still wouldn't want to take the chance of having any bits inside the cylinder. http://www.timesert.com/html/sparkplug.html

These are the inserts I'm familiar with. http://www.fulltorque.com/sparkpluginserts.htm

Hi guys, thank you for all the support and advice I have so far identified a number of kits on the market one of which I think is the best is timesert. So I Am in the process to find a qualified mechanic to do the job as last one I spoke to was reclutant to work on any old Guzzi.
Wish me luck!!!

I'd be more comfortable handing the head to a machinist. Machine shops tent to do this type much more precisely than a mechanic shop.
