V65C Handling

Hello,
The handling of my 1984 V65C feels unstable when cornering. Turning to the right, the bike feels as though it is drifting or sliding; sometimes with a sort of skipping feel. Turning to the left, the bike feels normal. The unstable feeling in the right turns is unnerving. I have checked the wheel bearings and they are all good with no play. The tires have good tread though they are not a matched set. The front is Metzeler ME33 Laser 110/90-18 at 32PSI. The rear tire is Pirelli Route MT66 130/90-16 at 45 PSI. I have owned the bike for about three months and these are the tires that came on it. The previous owner had only gear oil in the final drive, but never rode the bike very much. When I drained the oil from the final drive there was no discoloration of the oil to indicate excessive wear. The front forks and rear shocks are stock V65C. Does anyone have an idea what could be the source of this cornering instability?

Thanks,
JB

Rear tire pressure is way too high. Bring it down to 36 psi. Also check the steering head bearings. Put the bike on the center stand, then jack up the engine to get the front wheel of the ground. Grab the forks near the axle and check for movement front to back. There should be none. Then turn the front end left to right. Feel for any notchiness. Again there should be none. Remove the jack and check for any side play in the swing arm, again there should be none. How many miles are on the bike and what state are the rear shocks in? BTW, only gear oil in the rear end is OK. I stopped adding Moly years ago when I noticed a negative impact on the bearings.

I'm not sure if your tires are compatable. Mixing brands may cause problems as the profiles may be different, even mixing different style tires in the same brand can be a problem. If all of the above checks out, a matched set of tires would be in order, or at least put a comparable Metzler on the rear to work with the Laser up front.

JZ,

Thanks for your reply. The bike has a little under 22,000 miles. The shocks have a small amount of greasy residue that has collected at the bottom seat. I would not consider it to be a full out leak, but I know they don't have much oil to begin with. The spring tension is adjusted to the middle notch. How is the best way to test the shocks? I'll check the steering head bearings and swingarm.

What John said (..of course. )

Matching tires are essential. BUT for the Metzeler Lasertechs, I've found them to be, well, less trustworthy on the Breva, specially when partly worn.
From the same house you'll find Pirelli Sport Demons as a better choice. Presently I've got Michelin Pilot Activ, which are nice, but a bit slippery in the wet.
