V7 850 USB port installation question

Hi Folks,

Does anyone know the name of the electric cable connector that MG use to connect to their OEM (super expensive) USB port? I've not come across one of these before. I want to add a switched USB port under the seat and rather than pay for MG's, I was hoping to make my own that would fit their adaptor.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have a great weekend and may there be dry roads and the sun shining wherever you are.

There are a number of USB to SAE power adapters to make phone charging simple. Amazon has several. I just set my V7 up to charge my I Phone for less than $25. Don't get hosed with "special" connectors or cables.

I don’t know the cost of the Moto Guzzi part for the V7 850, but the one for the V85TT (complete kit for under the seat) was only $35. I bought it because it was easier than gathering the pieces and making my own.

Hi, here in Britain, the part is currently about £85.

Just to clarify, I know it’s cheaper and easier the add an SAE lead wired direct to the battery, and I’ll be doing that as well to connect a battery trickle charger, phone, etc. But that’s an always-live connection.

What I also want to do is have a switched (current off when key not in ignition) USB outlet to power items that will be permanently on the bike but power off when the bike is parked.

So, if I can figure out what connector MG are using on the inbuilt lead, I can buy the equivalent connector to make my own.

Hopefully that better explains what I’m trying to achieve. My MG dealer say they don’t know (not great, I know), so I’m hoping someone here does.

Thanks
Stu

Hey Folks,

A quick update. grzechu78 just replied in a conversation, and apparently, the port is a "Superseal AMP Tyco Fiat 2-pin". I googled it, and it looks right, so I've ordered one from eBay and will keep you posted on whether it worked.

Yes, that's the connector, got my USB charger hooked same as ya want to, "power on key". I got a bunch of them connectors on Amazon with 4in length wires attached and here's a word of caution for ya (! ! !)- CHECK YOUR POLARITY! Connectors I got had reversed red and black wires. Picture showed OK so I got what I ordered, but it was not what was coming out of bike's port. If I wouldn't doublechecked with voltmeter I would've fried my USB charger. I don't know whether ya ordered with wires or not. If without wires then ya'll obviously check before crimping but if with wires, then still check your polarity before powering on :)

Thanks for the advice. I’ll check before installing.

Hijacking this old thread....I have the USB port installed under the seat of my V7 850 but how are people running the cable up to the handlebar and connecting to their phone?

Under the tank, few cable ties to existing wiring :) That what I had earlier but then I found the best place to mount my phone- in my pocket LOL I have Bluetooth speakers hacked into my helmet so even when I need satnav it's still fine in my pocket
