V7 Classic etc, charging issues.

Last couple of months I've had several V7s through withcharging problems/blown reg/recs.

FAilures seem to come in two forms. Either the machine grossly over-charges and boils the battery before blowing the reg/rec. (My guess is that this is down to bad earth refference. Remove and check/clean the earth straps betwixt battery and block and ensure the block connector from the reg/rec to the loom is clean and tight.

The second one the bike stops charging because the block connector between the phases of the alternator and the reg/rec melts. Sometimes this will blow the reg/rec. Sometimes not. I had a woman in two days ago with this problem and when I shunted around the melted connector everything was honky-dory again!!!!

Worth checking and doing a bit of preventative maintenance on, I also ran an extra earth from the body of the reg/rec to the battery negative post. On earlier versions of the Ducati system this was important as the Reg/rec earthed through the frame. with the V7 system I'm not so sure but it won't do any harm!!!

As usual Pete Thanks for the Heads Up, My V7C will get a going over along with your recommendations !

That happened to a guy that came to bike week at night with his electric vest turned on. We made a heavy duty connector up out of automotive stuff at Camp Carlo.. :D As far as i know, it's been a permanent repair.

Thanks Pete.

I recall someone saying a connector in their Breva or V7C charging system melted and had to be replaced. He thought water could have gotten in and shorted it, but that was just his guess.

I'm surprised the connectors are such a weak link. I'll look at mine with a critical eye.

Thanks Pete :)

I have some checking to do
(22.000Km without any issues and I want to keep it that way)

Pete, did the troublesome rec/reg earths change on recent models, so that poor earths are not an issue?

I checked the V7C wire diagram, and it shows two wires to earth for the reg/rec. On the bike I can see the reg/rec earth wires (if you trust the color codes). I'm not sure where they earth to, but it looks like it grounds (earths) to a strap connected to the battery neg side, both joined by a bolt on the right side of the engine, behind the cylinder.

Am I right in guessing the factory solved the earlier problems, where earlier reg/rec's were earth to the frame, instead of this battery connection?

Thanks for the info Pete, I know this guy who had a quota, and he blew his rectifier, probably down to a bad ground.... strange thing is, he builds and flys airplanes......

I had the same problem as one of Petes customers- on my v7 cafe loose conection in block between rectifier and the loom , caused it to arc knackered the rectifier and boiled the battery,at 2000 miles. This is my first post i have been lurking for couple years. just like to say thank you to Pete for all his humour and wisdom he puts on this site. All the best Jim.

Jim, where was the issue? Was it at the plastic multi-wire connector behind the rectifier?

It's hard to see that it would go bad. My connector is tied together by the factory, and it looks like a dry location.

Hello sign, one of the pins inside the connector block was loose, first connection between rectifier and the loom, hope this helps. Jim.
