my friend Alan has just travelled from Ireland to Seattle and picked up a V700 with view to heading off for a few weeks touring around. So he decided to have a wee look and check the oils etc. This is what he emailed me......
Help.......
Checked compression after run on Sunday...just under 150psi so I thought OK
Drained all the oils....bevel box dirty, gearbox oil clean but overfilled...could explain weeping oil at speedo drive ?? Engine oil ...clean not black.
Was putting off the sump removal but did it today
Ye Gods....black thick sludge all the way...I mean I had to scrape it off...
Have tried to "wash" the sludge to see if any/much evidence of chrome flakes....have not reached conclusion yet ( Chris's coffee filter thing may take a hit !!!!)
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Looks like the sump has never been off....even had sludge INSIDE the gauze filter thingy
Discovered lots of tiny flakes in sump residue!!!
Thanks to a light on a stick have got a look at plenty of the bore on one side...other masked by oil pump...looks perfect, could be chrome , may not be, but it is very shiny and smooth.
So where did my flakes come from?
Looking from underneath , there is a perfect cut out to clear the nut head of the big end bolt
On the other side there is half a cut out. The other half is covered by what looks like a liner that has rotated through 5 or 10 degrees...very difficult to explain.
The nut misses it by nothing ( meaning really close )
Could something be wrong/have moved and the nut has machined some of the bore wall hence my collection of flakes??
If original I was expecting a solid walled cylinder not the double walled thing I am looking at here.
So Alan email John photos who then replied after having a good look at them and said....
OK, definitely iron liners. It appears the liner has turned or been misaligned when fitted, Clearly big end is not hitting it so it may never have mattered. Put the sump back on , add new oils and enjoy your holiday.
So what do you good folks think, bike is Maroon and was bought on ebay from Oregon a few months back if it sounds familiar to anyone
Cheers
