V7C Knocking

I've participated in a discussion about engine knocking on the "MG_750 · Moto Guzzi 750 Motorcycles" Yahoo group but thought I'd start something here to see if anyone has any insight.

I bought a second hand '09 V7C and noticed on my first big ride that when the engine is put under load in a higher gear and a lower rpm, I would hear a pinging. This while using Shell premium.

I talked to the local dealer and he suggested trying a regular unleaded because premium doesn't get used as much and goes bad in the station's tanks. I tried this (with Hess - don't ask why) and now that pinging has turned into a full fledged knocking in any gear when you put the engine under load.

I took the bike in to make sure I had the new map and they said I did, although I don't have a ton of confidence in their diagnosis.

Will going with the O2 Optimiser or having Todd flash and re-map the ECU (which I'm considering anyway) take care of this problem definitively? Is Hess gas just that bad? Or is it something else?

Appreciative of anyone's experiences with this.

Air-cooled bikes demand high octane, especially in the hot months. Most 2VPC Guzzis are ping'ers in the Summer. The 02-optimizer alone will not help with pinging. A PC-V will help largely with your problem, however my ECU flash is the basis for the fix (timing revisions). You will hear that the small blocks like to be rev'ed, don't lug it. Contact me direct for more info.

When we had a 750 Breva we only used quality premium fuel. We also kept the revs pretty high. No pinging at all, and it does get hot in Alabama. Keep the engine above 3500, both you and the bike will like it.

Should NOT ping under load. Knocking sounds could be also caused by an exhaust leak at any exhaust joint - check and tighten the exhaust clamps before trying anything else.

I had to use regular gas in my V7 Classic, one time, a month ago and there wasn't any knocking or pinging at all. Went back to super and I usually try to use the brand without ethanol, but if yours knocks that badly- something is not right.

Other causes: ignition timing (crank sensor?) Failing head gasket?

Good luck - its is well worth it to get the bike running like it should!

Since I've put the regular grade Hess in, it happens if I open the throttle about 50% so I'm forced to drive pretty conservatively. And it's LOUD like a pair of chattering teeth. Before, it was much more subtle and when the engine was really lugging.

Now, even at high rpms, if I gas it it knocks.

Have you been keeping an eye on the oil level? Did the dealer test the oil pressure? Have the TBs been balanced and the TPS reset? If the answer is no to any of these questions, then you may have located the problem.

Some bikes ping directly from the factory. It's just the way it is. Some of you may remember Spaceclam's Griso 1100 woes. I finally resolved it with heavy timing revisions on the ECU.

My new red 2011 was doing exactly what yours when I picked it up brand new from the dealer on the way home. I think they put 87 octane gas in it. I had to be very easy with the throttle to keep it from pinging. I put a gallon of 93 octane in after I rode it a while. It was a 200 mile ride home so I kept putting 93 octane in it every 50 miles or so by the time I got home it had virtually stopped. I ran the tank almost dry around town and filled it up with Mobil 93 octane and it hasn't knocked since but the temps have dropped off slightly. It was over 100 degrees when I picked it up and lately it has been high 90's so maybe that's why it quit. Don't even ask me about how the bike started when I got it home after it cooled off. Anyone selling a new bike that starts this badly with fuel injection needs their tails kicked. I have 600 miles on it now and starting has much improved but I have no explanation as to why. Dealer told me to give it the Ferrari tune up. Run the bejesus out of it, I'm thinking yea I'm going right out with a new bike and rodding the crap out of it...... It starts on the second try now but still dies a lot. If not for reading a post hear on a person having the same issue and them posting their regimine of starting I'd have had them truck it back to the dealer on warranty it was so bad. I say ride it real easy till you get almost out of fuel and fill it up with 93 octane and your problem likely to go away. If not maybe put some of the octane booster in it auto stores sell.
