As we were heading back from our 1750 mile trip to where ever, I noticed my left header pipe was getting bluer than the nice gold color of the right one. I assumed that the left cylinder was running hotter than the right. I mentioned it to the dealer when I ordered new tires as I have now got 8500 miles on the originals, and I asked to have Steve check it when I bring the bike in. Well I figured something must be out of adjustment as during the week I was getting more vibration to the bars than normal.

Well last night at a local bike night I ran into my old friend Danny Huggins who owns Triumph on Broadway in Hendersonville NC, where he restores and repairs English bikes. So I mentioned to him about the problem with the bike (his wife owns a V50), and he said he believed that the problem was that the left cylinder was running too rich and to check the plug and see if the setting is right. Today when I pulled the plug it was sooty and the gap was at .035 instead of between .023-.027 as of the book. Cleaned the plug and re-set it to .025 and replaced. Right plug was perfect, and right on setting.

Took the bike around the block and came back 50 miles later. The vibration was gone, and once the motor cooled down pulled the plug and it was the same color as the right one was. I guess I am going to keep a close watch on the pipe color and plug gaps. I also de-blued the pipes so I have a clean slate to work with.

I also share the experience that the smallblock is very sensitive to plug gap setting, which IME shall be 0,65 mm. No more, no less.
Don't know how long a plug will last; usually I'll change them at the regular 7500 km service. The BR8ES is cheap and extending the lifetime isn't worth the trouble a faulty plug can cause, IMHO.

I also agree that new plugs are in order, which is my first order of business today :D

Relative V7C "newbie" here - please elaborate on "de-bluing the pipes". I have tried various remedies, but not much joy. The "why" here is a bit of a long story involving the dealer and delivery.

Thanks, Alan

Don't.

Be proud of the deep blue flaming, showing the world that this bike is made for driving. ;)

I'm proud of my blue pipes!

Anders,

I think I reset my plugs at 0.7 last time and I think idle may be a litle off. I'll try 0.65 with new ones as new oil change is due next week. Thanks.

Thanks for that B)
I've lost some vibrations since I've put the gap setting at 0.65 (one was 0.7, the other 0.75).

You don't happen to have the correct valve clearances for a small-block, do you :?:

thanks in advance

The manual for my V7C doesn't recommend gapping the plugs. If the gap is wrong, it says to buy a new one. It's not what I'm accustomed to, and I think it's because of the electrodes made of platnium or other rare metal.
The interval for replacing the plugs is quite long too.
