V7R Oil filter cover refuses to come off

Hi,

I'm in the process of winterizing my V7R and usually I change the oil and filter as part of this process on my other bikes. This is the first year for this bike so I'm still getting to grips with the mechanics. I drained the oil but was not able to remove the oil filter cover on the sump. I removed all three bolts and attempted to pry, jiggle and soft-blow hammer the cover to loosen it. I tried a paint scraper to see if I could wedge it between the cover and the sumo. It would not budge. I didn't want to apply too much force so I backed off and stopped without changing the filter. Needless to say, I haven't refilled the sump with oil.

Is there a trick to getting this cover off. It should be straight forward but I may also be missing something "Italian". Any hints?
 
Are you sure you have the right cover? Look at the parts manual in the download section of this site It shows the usual single bolt through the center of the cover and filter like all the other small blocks.

This is correct. There is but a single long bolt that hold the filter and cover in place. The cover is round and located on the front edge of the sump. Item #14:

Yes, I have the right cover. Duh, I was thinking of my BMW cover at the time I wrote that (it has three bolts). It was the large single bolt and I extracted it fully from the sump. So, there was nothing to impede the cover from releasing but it would not budge. I'm just wondering if there is something I am missing that needs to be released.
 
It may be stuck to the o-ring. There isn't much room for rotary motion because of the fins, but sometimes trying to rotate a stuck cover will release the grip. Be careful as it probably wouldn't take much to snap off a fin. If damage is necessary, choose the cover, it can be replaced easier and cheaper than the pan. I use a new o-ring every time I replace a filter. With the filter cover stuck this tight, the o-ring may be compromised. I recommend replacing the o-ring at each filter change. They are cheap enough to not take the chance on a used o-ring. Also I coat the o-ring in chassis grease, it makes install and removal easier.
 
LOL Cartridge Filters LOL

I love Guzzi! Chevy stopped using cartridge filters in 1964! I used to sell conversion kits for them to use the "new" spin on filters. Old technology still works and there is nothing wrong with it.

I'm still getting used to "new tech" which for most everybody else is really old hat by now, I've just been asleep for 40 years. Hey maybe I should start calling myself Rip.
 
Of course the irony is that if it leaked, it wouldn't be stuck. It would self-lubricated and be free.

It's good you asked RBM. Many's the time I broke something because I wasn't familiar with it, and didn't see why it wasn't coming off/turning/or doing whatever.
 
UPDATE: V7R Oil filter cover refuses to come off

I found out the problem with the cover. I dropped the oil pan and had to use a wooden stick and hammer to free the cover. Apparently, it got itself painted shut. It looks like the factory paint reflowed just around the lip of the cover and sealed the cover shut. There was evidence of chipped paint on the edge of the cover and a ridge of paint on the filter tunnel corresponding to that cover lip. I carefully used my fingernail to remove the loose chips of paint. I suspect the paint may not have been fully cured when the bike was assembled. The reflow must have occurred somewhere between the 1000km service and now.

I'm definitely taking John's advice to replace the O-ring. It must have been compromised in this situation. Besides, there is validity in changing the O-ring each time because the engine does run hot in stop-and-go traffic.
