V9 Bobber broken shift linkage

The metal rose joint is it coming off the ball, or unthreading? The way it is secured the joint and nut lock are turned against each other like when you double nut a fastener by turning one against the other. No loctite should be needed at all. BTW, vice grips or pliers are not an acceptable tool for working on this item.

Ok, first things first, we can only see what you posted and what you wrote.

You said, “I just fab another one up using 6m thread rod and 6mm ball joints”.

I thought this was your finished repair. You said nothing about fabricating this on the side of the road.

John Zibell (a Moto Guzzi Master mechanic) and I (another professional motorcycle mechanic) are trying to assist you but we instantly notice things like this. I apologize your feelings got pricked. Not my intention.

There is nothing wrong with the part or the motorcycle per se. The OEM shift linkage components are made of high-strength steel and they do not just fail like this.

I’m sorry but there is a problem with your technique obviously if you are now doing this for the second time.

We’re trying to help you but, by all means, continue down the course you have started to take. It’s sure to bring about the result you are searching for…

Perhaps you should consider not taking offense and laughing it off. We’ve all made a mess of some part in our lives.

Instead you could have just laughed it off and said “Yeah, it’s galled and screwed up because I used pliers to hold it while trying to fix her on the side of the road. Not my best work for sure! 😆. How do I properly fix this?”


If you goal is to receive help, you couldn’t find better so relax and be happy that we are here trying to help you. Show some respect and appreciation that strangers have come to your rescue.

Stick with the ball joints. The work well and have for years. The old loop frames and early Tonti frame bikes didn't use them and shifting was a bit sloppy so you had to take that into account when shifting.
 
When you were fixing it while out and about did you get M6 threaded ball joints and weren't slipped some close ish 1/4" UNF or similar?
1/4 - 28 UNF comes in at 0.907mm pitch and M6 is 1mm, so over a short distance it would probably go together but it wouldn't be right.
I wouldn't think about it over here but I know the US is different in many aspects

Since it happened once before I hand ordered a set of 4 6mm ball joints Amazon and a piece of 6mm thread rod
Only thing is factory is a right and left hand threaded rod and ball joints. So basically there no adjustment witch is fine for me
