for yuks (and because carburation is not perfect), I recently fitted a vacuum gauge to my EldoVert. The needle bounced hopelessly around. Fine, I pinched the hose down, and it steadied out. Bad news at idle, it it sat at about 5 inches of Hg, not the 17-22 that is normal. (see:http://www.autospeed.com/cms/A_2393/article.html). The info at that URL says this could mean a manifold leak.

I checked the gauge by hooking it up to my mighty-vac, both meters read in lock step...

My question to the collective brain trust is, have you ever installed a vacuum gauge? What did/does it read?

Thanks,
Mike

Mike,

That is why I don't use gauges, but actual columns of mercury. The 5 inches is about all I get with mercury. At high RPM it does go higher, but I never measured. If there was an actual 17 inches of Hg at idle, with the real tool (mercury sticks), you would suck the Hg out of the tubes at high RPM. I thing the basic premise of 17 inches at idle to be incorrect.

well that's a data point... thanks.

I got rid of my mercury carb stix years ago once the kids were born... I think I was a bit too paranoid...

I have only used carb stick (mercury gauges) on a few motorcycle engines. I never got more then 8 inches or so at idle.
I think some motors could pull that at idle. But none I have worked on.

yes I remembered... Gotham on the ducati. Sorry I wasn't more verbose...

what are you doing on a guzzi forum? riding a guzzi now? that is great...

Yeah, between the wife and I we have 4.
She has owned a V11 since 2001, now she also has a Lario.
I have a Griso ('07) and I bought Jeff Strums '93 Daytona from him.
It seems to be a bit of a sickness.
