Well my G5 was very tough to shift. Hard to find nuetral.
Then the noises started... Here's the shift drum. Man is it ugly.

Has anyone seen this before?

The trans has about 4K miles on it since NEW. It's a long story but I think it true... but that drum has some scary issue..

Whatcha think?

Slip it into the casing with nothing else in there. bolt the back cover on and stick your pinky through the input shaft 'ole and see of the drum spins, (Put the shims on the drum of course.). If it spins OK then try puting the selector forks on their shaft and sliding 'em up and down. Sometimes if the box has been shifted brutally the fork shaft can get bent, then the forks bind and it won't want to change gears.

If you have any doubts about the drum's integrity gimme a yell. I think I've got a few lying about.

Well I took it appart and cleaned everything with nice new solvent.

I couldn't see any obvious signs of stress or wear.

Fortunately I have another 5 speed dissasembled (I was making custom gears and ratios... but that's a story for another day).

I used the shift drum and forks from the spare parts pile, shimmed the drum (took thicker shim... about .020 to .030" I think) and it shifts like butter.

Man I hope I fixed this thing... the proof will come when all assembled.

Thanks for the help Pete.
