Just joined the forum. Hello to you all.

I have what according to the official registration documents is a '73 750S. The #'s match. So it's the original frame and motor. However the serial #'s don't make any sense according to all the lists I have been able to find: MOTOR VK 11759 FRAME VK 034382. It was registered with those numbers in '73. Any info that would help explain this?

Thanks

Are the numbers you quote from the actual machine or from the documents? The frame numbers should begin with VK1 and the engine with VK3. If the numbers on the documents have been entered in the wrong positions it could make sense, even if there's an extra leading 0 in the engine number. There should be only five digits, not six.

If you had frame VK11759 and engine VK34382 the numbers fit the sequence for a 750S. Please post photos of the frame number and engine number as stamped onto the machine.

Thanks - the numbers are as stated. Both on the machine and onthe original papers issued in '73. ?????????????

Sorry to say it but those numbers don't look genuine. The letter/number style looks wrong and the stamping inconsistent, unlike any Guzzi numbers I've seen.

The engine number should be stamped into rough cast aluminium and preceded and followed by a star. It looks like the original number on your engine has been ground off. The frame number should be vertical and on the RHS of the steering head, also preceded and followed by a star. It should be adjacent to the homologation number that is preceded by a three letter code e.g. DGM

Additionally, 750S production began in 1974 so it could not have been available in 1973.

It looks like someone has transposed and restamped the frame/engine numbers. Irrespective of its provenance you should still use and enjoy it.

Thanks - seems like one of the owners (there's a complete official history from the original purchaser with the original papers) must have supplanted the bike with another one using the numbers and confusing frame and motor number. The bike has been modified with a 3rd disc brake, but otherwise it has the specifications of an 750S. The question is what the motivation was - the last owner had the bike for more than 10 years. And it never was a collector's item with a different paint job and modifications...

I'll scan them - my guess is that the original bike was either totaled or stolen - but either doesn't really make much sense...

Okay, here the plot thickens... Here's the original papers from when the bike was registered the first time in Austria.

Sorry - not yet really conversant with the mechanics of this site.

They date to Aug 1975. The motorcycle was examined prior to registration (it has a single registration, meaning not one issued regularly in conjunction with manufacturer and importer. Such a registration would be issued f.i. when the vehicle was imported by a private person) in July 1975. The date of manufacture is 1974. The numbers recorded are exactly as they are today - both in the documents and on the bike. To have them gotten wrong would have meant not one oversight, but two (including the 0 on the frame # and also transposing the frame and motor #'s). This seems unlikely, given the anal tendencies of the bureaucracy involved, as it had to pass an inspection and was also photographed at the time. So it seems that whatever happened happened before July 1975. Ever since no one has caught the mismatch. Possibly a stolen bike imported with false papers? After 40 years it's hard to tell...

It's really interesting. The bike looks correct and the numbers tally, they're just in the wrong spot. What would seal it is to see the VK number on the steering head. You'll see it on the RHS when the steering is on full left lock.

By now what happened back then doesn't matter but it's an interesting trail to follow. If you don't have a genuine 750S it's OK, you still have a really nice bike to ride. If the frame has a genuine 750S number then it's a bonus as it's the rarest Tonti framed sports bike (except for the 100CX)

The frame number on the steering head was ground off and replaced with the number in the photo - same as in the documents. The pix is just sideways. So there's no way to tell. It really doesn't matter to me since I bought it as a ride, not for collection & didn't pay any premium price - same as I would have for an 850-T. Anyway it has undergone enough modifications (paint, seat, brakes, and I'm sure a million other things - like electronic ignition, performance tuning etc.) to render it a mutt.... Just a nice ride, no worries about dropping it either.
