Why is the glass headlight one unit on the Griso?

After a spirited ride last night I find a nice crack in the glass lense running almost perfectly vertical top to bottom. Don't recal going through a little metor shower so WTF.
I figured I could replace only the lens but it turns out the glass is sealed to the cone portion of the assembly. The dollar amount has just gone up! Lovely!
Am I stuck ordering the unit (06740400) or has anyone gotten creative in this situation?

This may not be much help, but a friend of mine recently got a stone through his headlight on his Triumph Bonneville. This had a separate glass on, but it was actually cheaper to replace it with a sealed unit. He just went to a car part supplier with the old one and got a matching one, maybe from a Mini, that fitted fine.

I don't know the answer as to why it is a single unit, but I found out about it much the same way you did. Another vehicle in front of me must've pitched up a stone that broke my lens as well. The $200 cost of replacement was a bit of a bummer.

I've been meaning to fit a protective shield so it doesn't happen again, but I haven't gotten to it yet.

Ventura sells a ready made one, but I think I'll just pick up some plastic sheeting and cut one out myself.

You can get a standard H4 insert that'll fit in the bucket with little effort. From memory a Hella 1052 or 62 works. One has provision for a pilot globe, one doesn't. Cost? About $70AU I believe. I had the headlight taken ut on my 1100 Griso on the first day I owned it and replaced it with a Hella. You need to use 'W' clips to hold the unit into the ring but other than that it works fine although itdoesn't have the swank parablic lens.

Similar crack in mine... I'm really frugal (OK... cheap :) )

The crack didn't affect visibility or performance, so:
I cleaned the lens thoroughly, masked both sides of the crack, and used a clear epoxy product that pre-mixes in the syringe applicator. I pressed it in to the minor gap that was there and lifted the excess with a razer blade. This has prevented any further damage and effectively seals out water.

I know the "scar" is there, but very few other people have noticed it ;)
