2013 V7 transmission oil question

Have noticed these transmission will hang up down shifting at times.

Have been wondering if this is caused by too heavy an oil.

I remember when I went from 90 weight oil to 20-50 syn three oil in my HD transmission my transmission shifted much better with less hang up when downshifting or false neutrals when cold.

So that being said, I'm wondering if I used a good fully syn 20-50 in my V7 transmission would this help it shift better. If the transmissions on other bikes can operate on motor oil why would this transmission not be able to? I've never noticed anyone trying this out before. For some reason the school of thought is that this transmission must have heavy gear oil? I can remember that school of thought on the HD's when they came out with that 20-50 full syn guys were reluctant to put that stuff in the transmissions and these days the practice is widely accepted other then the old school guys would still insist on 90 weight.

From a non-engineering stand-point, there are huge differences between gear oils, even synthetics. Furthermore, the small block gear box is nearly 3 decades old with little updates, and it is one of the main updates on the new V7 II.
Mobil1 gear oils pour like 20w-50, as does Redline Lightweight ShockProof (which I use and recommend heavyweight). I would strongly recommend against running motor oil.

Is there specific any reason why you don't want to use the recommended lubricant, which the engineers who work at Moto Guzzi probably spent a lot of time and energy on selecting, and who presumably have a lot of experience with the details of this gearbox? Is there any reason why you think you might know better than them?

Thanks guys, I'll stick with what they recommend.

the transmission oil experiences continual high shear forces from the gears as they drive one another crushing the oil,
while the main engine oil is pumped into cylindrical bearing surfaces (rocker shafts, main bearings etc) and has to resist the extreme heat from combustion

two very different enviroments
even so Ducati (V twin air cooled) run the same oil (10 -40W full synth) through gearbox and engine without adverse effects.

It needs to be changed regularily ...is the main rule no one can break without consequence

You haven't said how many miles you have. I found my transmission got noticeably better as it broke in. After 1500 miles it got better and even more so after 5000.

Also, after a few thousand miles, the rider gets better on the bike, knows how to shift without missing gears or being lazy on the clutch lever, etc. It's like a good marriage, takes a bit of time.

So Todd, would you recommend Redline Shockproof heavy in tranny AND rear drive? I used it with success in my Calvin, and was wondering about the small block (V7S)?
