Hi all,

Wondering if it's possible to put one of the v7iii gearboxes on a 2012 v7 engine? Has this been done before?

My 2012 only has 5 speed, be good to have that extra gear for the motorway.
 
I have both and much prefer the 5 speed. massive project for no gain.

What do you prefer about it?

I rode a v7iii rough a few weeks ago and the 6th gear was a godsend on the motorway.

Plus my guzzi already has the engine and gearbox removed so would'nt be any extra work providing it fits.
 
All you have to do is compare part #'s. Like for the clutch plate, same plate usually means same splines. I will bet it bolts right up. Output shaft is the same if they use same swingarm and driveshaft.

What about shift linkage?
 
If you look at the actual gear ratios, you'll see 5th = 6th on the new box, so they just added a real first gear. Waste of time and $ IMO.
 
Hmm. I haven't looked at the gear ratios and tire sizes to compare. All I can say is that the V7III Racer, set up the way I have it now (with Conti RA3 tires) seems very nicely geared for all situations. I can pootle along at a walking pace in dense traffic in first, and cruise at about the same rpm in sixth as I am used to from my LeMans V at 70-75 mph. In normal riding, I find myself between first and fourth most of the time, because the V7III loves to rev so much, and often find myself forgetting that I'm in fifth zipping down the highway at 65 to 70 mph. :)

That said, doing a gearbox conversion is a big job and it's rare that I'd take the time and money to do it, if it is possible.
 
My riding is different from a lot of folks.
98% of mine is East coast mountains where it is constant curves all day. at the end of a 200 mile day the GPS says top speed 67MPH average speed 46MPH. the top speed is usually passing some Florida driver!
with the 5 speed I use third and fourth 99% of the time. never fifth and ocosanaly second. with the six speed and yes the engine power band is a bit different in the III, I use 3,4,5th. it just seems to need more shifting. I see #6 once every third or fourth ride.

Hey Harvey Just my 2 cents worth but read Vagrant reply above.
In all my years of Guzzi the top gear has always been reserved for 80 mph & above.

Guzzi's really do best in the 5000 rpm range if you are riding under 4000 rpm then you are starting to lug the engine.
It's always been a chore to get new Guzzi owners to ride the 4500 to 5000 range.
So many want to get the bike into top gear too soon.

On the rare occasion I ride with other bikes & they are doing the 55/60/65 mph ride I'm stuck between 3rd & 4th gear.

Like Todd pointed out 5th gear on a 5 speed & 6th gear on a 6 speed the ratio is identical = no gain.
