'02 Cali Special Sport Running Issues?

I just picked up an '02 California Special Sport Aluminum with around 3000 miles and she's not running quite right. I originally attributed this to bad gas but it's still not right after draining and filling with fresh gas.
The bike has a hard time taking throttle and the idle is low. It will go down the road at 65 or 70 but it takes more throttle than I think it should and opening it further will slow you down.
I know the newer BMWs (and others) will have the fuel pump fail if they sit for extremely long periods of time so I will check fuel pressure later today. I will also check the airbox for critter nesting or food storage.
The charcoal can has been removed and the vacuum line plugged, but otherwise I believe the bike to be 100% stock.
Any other thoughts?
Thanx!

Check the boots that connect the throttle bodies to the manifolds for cracks & leaks.
Synchronize the throttle bodies & balance them, reset the TPS.
Put in new spark plugs, fuel filter & air filter.

That's a good start & probably needs to be done anyway.

Here's where we're at now.
No critter nesting or food storage in the airbox.
Fuel pressure is about 47 psi at idle.
The previous owner had low pressure fuel line from the tank to the 'Y', so I'll change that out. Checking throttle synch is the next step I suppose. After that I will probably play with the TPS.
Thanx!

I've done dozens of these now. This is what MUST be done to insure a non-meltdown: Flush and clean the fuel tank. Replace the fuel lines, filter and pump. Remove injectors and have them professionally cleaned locally or by RCEng.com - and of course a full basic service afterwards is paramount; valves, TPS check/reset and throttle body sync mandatory. And if you want it to run tops, a GT-Rx ECU flash.

Thanx, GT.
I spent most of the day yesterday chasing the throttle synch and idle adjustment. It's not quite right now, but it's better. I've been a motorcycle technician for over 20 years and built and tuned my own turbocharged Land Speed Racing bike. The best I can say about the factory service manual is that it's pretty much worthless. If it were at least in print I could use the pages that I can't read in the bathroom. I also used two different sets of directions from the internet, but they don't really match what I have either. My Cali has the two plastic 'dogbones' that actuate the throttle shafts and no 'adjustment handwheel'. The TPS is also on the left throttlebody, not on the right.
The injectors will need to be cleaned next. I can't get it to idle without opening the butterflies a lot farther than everyone recommends and it's just acting 'lean'.
I'll have to come back to this a little later. The Guzzi was bought as a toy (I had a V-11 Sport before) and right now I need to get my R1150RT back together for a cross-country trip in a little more than a week.
I'm certainly interested in an ECU flash (I'll have a few questions, I've flashed the ECU on the Hayabusa several times and need to flash it again) and perhaps if you have time you could help clarify a few points on the idle/synch process.
Thanx for your time.
Colin

My pleasure, and welcome to the GT Forum and Guzzi Famiglia. Congrats on acquiring my all time favorite Guzzi.
The TPS should be on the left side. The sync is with the adjuster between the throttle body linkage, accessed on the left side. If you've messed with the "sacred" idle set screw, disconnect the linkage and set the idle stop to 150mV at the TPS. Then reconnect and set to 475mV. The actual idle adjust is set/balanced using the air bleed screws on the bottom of the throttle bodies. You might want to pull and clean those as well. All of this only matters once you get the injectors cleaned and tested.
