2008 Sport 1200 - help requested with left handlebar light switch(es)

I have a couple of 'issues' that relate to the left handlebar 'light switch'.

First issue: the high beam switch will not remain in the "on" position. Before I attempt to disassemble the switch to see how it is intended to work, have others had this problem and is there a fix?

Second issue: the computer interface button (In the owner's manual, pg26-#12, called the "SET button). Whether using this button to enter the code to access diagnostics, etc. or changing modes when mobile, this button is at best a nuisance, but usually very frustrating - at least on this bike.

Making contact with this switch is a matter of happenstance. I have tried every possible way to press the button and no joy - one never knows if the attempt will be successful. This is especially frustrating when entering the 5-digit access code as to confirm the sequential, rolling number choice one must hold the button down for 2 seconds. When the contact is iffy or intermittent, this most times results in a number change rather than a number set which then requires that you cycle around again to get to the correct number.

I may not be the only one with this problem.

What is prescribed please for this issue?

Thanks in advance.

I have cut my set button out and obtained a press button from Maplins, it's not waterproof so it lives by the clocks, even that now needs replacing.

These switches are sealed, replacement is the only option.

In saying that, recently I found the computer interface switch on my Norge behaving in a similar manner. I dismantled to find it was sealed, but then discovered the issue was with the multi pin connector on the dashboard. A few ins and out, and it was good to go once more.

Bad connectors on Guzzis is all part of the attraction - Italian lectrics!

If you are going to pull your switch block apart, hang an old bed sheet under the assembly to catch the small parts that tend to jump out. Oh, and use a sheet with no holes in it, otherwise Mr Murphy might be tempted...

Use good light and go slow.

I have the same switch block on my 2016 B11.
The high beam button has never given me grief (so far).
The set button was difficult to use at first but once you're used to it, it's a breeze. I operate it from under the handle bar (palm of your hand facing up) using my middle finger - never a problem. You just need to not rush the button pushing and ensure each push is firm. As they say, slow and steady.

regards

Robert

How's life Robert? Haven't touched that bottle as yet, though we looked at it the other night... Could be imminent!

Tony,

All good down at cold, wet Nar Nar Goon. The bikes been idle for a couple of weeks, but I'll get out soon.
Make sure you're home when you crack that bottle, it'll kick you.

cheers

Robert

Thanks for the replies and advice. I am considering a replacement. The only part I have found that appears as a direct replacement was this one on eBay. This part is used, from another 1200S. The pics of that bike are a reminder that it's possible to have a bad day on a great bike. ;)

I used the Guzzi part numbers included in the eBay post to try to find an unused part on a few web sites but the example pictures on those sites do not match what I'm looking at. Here are the part numbers - not sure they are correct:

886229
977522

Can anyone recommend a source for this exact part that I need?

Dunno where they get their part numbers from, but I think the one that Pinwall are selling will work.

The Guzzi part number you want is GU05738030.

I could be wrong but I don't think the 1200 Sport ever used the "Norge" paddle type switches.

But is there any reason why you couldn't use the Norge type, have to get the wiring to fit, but a switch is a switch surely?

On my Norge I sprayed lots of electrical contact cleaner into it and operated the switches several times. Had no problems since. If you split the switch unit and take it off the bars you can easily spray into every part.

Thank you Brian. I like the idea of contact cleaner and its certainly easy enough to undo the switch and give it a few shots. I may give it a go this weekend, but that unfortunately would only solve one of the issues.

So, I received the replacement switch (from AF1 Racing). Thanks to Kiwi Dave for an accurate part number. The item I received is an exact replacement.

My question now is, where are the two connectors located? I don't see this mentioned in the manuals I have downloaded.

I installed the replacement switch today and wanted to report back.

There are actually two connections. One under The tank, and the other is inside the instrument cluster. So, the last two replies were correct.
