Bad start to New Year.

Now that sounds like you could be onto something Canuck, I will go out now and identify this relay for next time it plays up.
Here,s hoping but I think you could have nailed it.

Bisbonian, I have a standard Yuasa battery, Tried another battery I had laying around last time I had this problem and still no start.
Its summer here but not that you would know it,new dump of snow on the Southern Alps yesterday and 12 deg C(53 F) here in Nelson which is one of the sunniest spots in New Zealand.

Sorry canunk1969 but the colour coding for my 1200 Sport is completely different to the Norge GT so I could not find the Retaining Relay(start up logic). In fact I cant find one anywhere in the list of relays for the Sport as the wiring and relay setup is more like the layout of the Breva 1100. Link below. But again colour coding is different.

What year is the bike? It might be you should be looking at the earlier Norge diagrams, not the GT8V
I have had similar issues with my Norge, and have found the start button to be partly to blame. I spray into all these switches with electrical contact cleaner, not WD40. Servisol make one available here, but others must be available where you are. I also spray into every connector I find on the bike.

Bloody hell, you win. Apart from the Multipla I hope everyone was OK ?
It was 0535 on New Year's morning, we were all tucked up in bed, didn't hear a thing.
Eldest Daughter was still out from the night before, Wife answered the knocking on the door to blue flashing lights and a policeman calling her by name, you can guess what was going through her mind!

The BMW phoned the police, the car did that is, not the owner, he scarpered!
Reported it stolen the next day . . . :wasntme:

Brian, not saying you are wrong on using contact cleaner, but I would just be careful when using it for lubricated switches. Contact cleaner by definition removes all oils. If you are going to use it, just make sure it it one that has a built in lubricant.

Why did I think you had a Norge.....sorry about that. Assumption on my part.

Here are three wiring diagrams. Not sure which sport you had but it contains the ABS and Non ABS versions for early and late model.

According to the diagrams, the early model did not have a startup relay, but the 4V versions and newer do. Not sure which you have but you should be able to tell from the attached diagrams.

If you don't have the relay then I will agree that the start button is the most likely suspect at this time. Easy enough to take apart and clean up the contacts. May just need some emery paper on the contact to remove buildup.

Emery <> Contacts are not compatible. Something more akin to points file (only if needed) followed by silver cloth is a better way to go. Contact thickness (or reduction of) may lead to further issues in the future - just saying...

OK I should have expanded my description to Contact Cleaner and Lubricant. Servisol is one such product. It also helps keep the damp out.
I've had to scrape the blue/green oxide off contact before now.

I need to source some here. Most contact cleaners I have found are cleaner only and not lubricant. That is why I have been using WD40 with Silicone. Strips everything away, cleans and then leaves a dry silicone residue as a lubricant. Need to expand my searches....

Definitely!
Emery Cloth can leave bits of the Abrasive Medium (hardness similar to Vanadium, Tungsten, hardened Steel etc) embedded in the Surfaces, and if it's too coarse, can reduce the Contact Surface Area (due to the width/depth of Scoring).
Best to use a very fine >800 grit 'Wet-or-Dry' Paper, wet with WD40, Silicone spray, or a very light Oil.
