Breva 750 Gearbox noise.

dbeerd said:
The only noise that I had came from 5th Gear.

See, I can't hear 5th gear at speed over the wind noise despite my tall fairing, but all the gears make that same straight cut gear teeth noise that Japanese bikes (especially my old Kawasaki) make normally. It certainly hasn't altered since I bought the bike (I've put on about 2000km so far) despite putting high quality synthetic gear oil in it. Some noise is actually pretty common from what I've heard, and there are stories of mechanics taking apart gearboxes because of noise, finding nothing wrong and putting them back together again.

But every now and then some one gets it REALLY bad (like you) and there really are some pretty bad teeth in there. I find it pretty scary that after only 30,000 km you are finding that extent of wear. Either you've got a bad batch of gears or the available lubricants in South Africa aren't up to the job.

Please keep us posted on how the rebuild goes. I know Teo Lamers in the Netherlands has most of the gears in stock (I checked in case I need to do the same.) They seem to range from 80 Euro to 120 Euro. Not sure what that would be in Rand, but you wouldn't be paying the VAT.

Hi, Thanks for the info. I have been using the "Castrol" brand of lubricants in the motor and box since new. I have used this oil in all my bikes from 1980 and have never had any issues. It meets all the Guzzi specs. So I realy don’t know what went wrong with this box. I have however consulted with a few gear cutting experts today and they inform me that we cant just TIG up the damaged parts, Mill back into spec and harden the gears. They say as soon as the Mill tool hits the case hardend part of the gear tooth the cutting tool will be damaged. I may just have to have some new gears cut. Anyone out there with gearbox noise looking for gears? I think that I should have a few extra manufactured.
:(

Besides that I use to compare the speedometer and the rev counter to tell what gear I'm in, I can always tell when I'm in 5th.
I can hear it without my hearing aids and through helmet and ear plugs by the whine.
But so far no need for new gears.

I really hope you'll find an affordable solution!

I guess mine's still pretty good then. I can't hear it at all in 5th, but it is most audible when I am trickling along slowly in low gears. Perhaps they don't splash enough at that speed?

They are conctant mesh build gearboxes, so all gears are running all the time, the speed will depend on motor revs, not the vehicle speed. So there will be "splash" alright. :)

It's hard to believe that so many gears, in differing sizes, could all be bad. From the picture it's difficult to tell what caused the damage. Is is possible that chips from one bad gear caused excessive wear on the others?

As a check, how about testing the hardness of a bad gear and a good gear. The Rockwell hardness test is easy (I did it in college). Do any of your friends know a metal shop with a tester. ?

Joe

Hi Joe, It’s a great idea, I will be looking into it. My knowledge of these things is limited as I am a computer programmer by training. Thanks for the info it is greatly appreciated.

It sounds like Piaggio doesn't own the importer in South Africa like they do other countries. What they are doing, is passing the buck back to the importer to solve you problem who apparently haven't been any help to you so far.

It seems that the customer service of Moto Guzzi simply copy- paste the same tamplate answer to everyone. If this is customer service I am an astronaut. They don't care for everything. I receive the same exactly answer for my problem.

Hi John, There is no importer in SA?? :(

With their standard answers, maybe you need a standard lawyer. See if they will answer one of those. Once you get a lawyer involved, go for the pound of flesh from them. It may be the only way they will learn to care about customers.

:? They are supposed to be officially represented by Piaggio Hellas in Greece... Most Piaggio shops also carry the MGs.
So it seems that "something is rotten in the state of Denmark"...

No Piaggio in SA?

No, no. There IS a Guzzi dealer in Denmark. :side:

Living in South Africa I have to have a sense of humor. I still love Guzzi. I have been to Italy twice and even have visited the Guzzi museum. Thinking of it, next time I go perhaps I should take the gearbox with.

Does anyone know if the Breva 750 gears in the gearbox are unique to that model. Would I be able to source gears from any other older model???? :?:
