I managed to get over the water briefly a few times last year and with luck will do so again this year but for a bit longer.
I've got a policy with European Breakdown Cover, so don't have to get special cover each time.
I've never bothered with travel insurance always relying on my trusty E111 free from the post office.
But, the level of cover provided differs by country, people like the Swiss charge you for almost everything, including some of the cost of the ambulance should some twat knock you off. Sure your insurance might pay out in the end but can you fund potentially 10's of thousands for years while they sort it?
This website details what you get and where.

I tried the link it points at for further cover and for me and her it's £40 for the whole year.
Perhaps I'm just getting old but it may be of interest to those of you crossing La Manche.
