Norge 8V becomes 4V (mono) when hot

Remember my friend with the custom-painted red Norge 8V that got a new engine after the original engine lost all oil due to the latest assembly glitch (after months of waiting, and despite the recall on the glitch that was issued just after the incident)?

Since a week or two, one cylinder stops firing when ambient temperatures go above 25°C or so. As usual, Piaggio is being as helpful as ever during summer holidays, and the dealer didn't find a cause (in about 20 hours work...)

Anyone here ever had this already?

When the cylinder cuts out is it loss of spark? The only component I know of that will succumb to heat is an ignition coil. Works while cool, breaks down when it get hot.

I'd already suggested to have the dealer look at the coil, as well as the spark plug/lead ('anti parasite').

Apparently it's the left cylinder, and here's what I now know more:
- No anomalies on the Axone/Navigator
- valves & tappets OK and well adjusted
- left injector has been changed
- fuel pump and associated circuit (electronics) have been changed
- fuel tank and its breathers removed, checked and reinstalled

Some of those have been at Piaggio (France)'s request.

I don't know if they've tried to check for spark, but that must not be easy to do once the engine is really hot...

Rene,

The last two items on your list would cut both cylinders out if there were a problem. The only left sided specifics are the coils, leads and caps. Could be the signal from the ECU to fire the left coil is breaking down, but unlikely. I suggest the dealer put a known good coil on the left and see what happens. It will probably take care of the issue. Also don't forget what Pete said about the leads and plug caps. A set of the NGK caps would be a good thing to do as well.

Thanks John, of course I knew this, and it has already been pointed out on the French forum where I'm following this issue. Ought I say that at least one of those checks were suggested by a local Piaggio rep? :?

In any case I'll pass on your suggestions. There is no cylinder-specific temperature management in the ECU, nor a TPS for each throttle body, which could also cause single-sided drop-outs I guess?
