Oil under the swing arm ...

Might be worth getting the shop to check yours Rene? I've only heard of this happening to Norges. So either there was a run of CARCs for Norges assembled by a drunken fuckwit or Norges are all riden my hopeless nongs :p

Pete

Heh, delivered the bike yesterday. I'd printed out some of the posts here for reference, and as the mechanic was in the front shop, I asked him to check the pinion stuff and the main bearing, as suggested. Guess I was a little awkward, he seemed to think I wanted to teach him his job ... apparently he considers it self-evident to check this sort of thing when he has to takes something apart.

He also mentioned that normally one would change the bearings. Not really sure which ones he was talking about, but that may explain the 170€ parts price figure my dealer cited.

Rene - any update on your bike? Peter Roper is still negotiating with MG on my behalf to get the CARC replaced.

Regards

Oops, I thought I'd posted here, but apparently not, or I did something wrong.

So, yes, I got back the bike 2 days after leaving her at the dealer. Mechanic spent almost 4h on the CARC — he's slow but meticulous. The changed the entry seal, 2 or 3 rings/clips, but also the big rectangular seal that can be seen when taking the CARC off. That's a costly one, but apparently they prefer taking no chances with it, given the annoyance of getting in. I don't really care about it this time, as I had a considerable 'avoir' ... I think in the end I just paid the price for a new front tyre for the CARC repair, 40k service and mounting the rubber.

Apparently no issues with either bearings nor the pinion nut. I've done about a 1000 km since, and no more signs of leaking.

A local pal took his 2006 Norge in for a similar leak, but was diagnosed with a leaking gearbox exit seal. Another dealer, who hadn't taken the precaution of ordering parts for both ends when first checking on the leak...!

It's been a little while since the last post on this topic, but I wanted to let the group know of another instance of a failed peg nut / lock washer. I've got a 2007 Norge with ~17,000 miles. The bike began making a horrific clashing noise in the rear end during deceleration, so I took it to my dealer here in the U.S. The diagnosis was a disintegrated lock washer and stripped peg nut. In my circumstance, the threads on the splined shaft in the final drive needed to be rethreaded due to some galling during the failure. No known bearing or gear tooth damage yet, but I suppose time will tell once we get her buttoned back up. Hoping to have the bike this week - it's been in the shop for a month!

Looks like my Norge has developed this fault while sitting in an underground car park for 8months. Spotted a patch of oil on the ground under the swing arm, just a day or so after reading this thread. Checked along it and, yup, seems to have come from same brake line mounting.

From what been said on this thread it seems like I'll still be able to run the bike, at least to the shop (~30kms) and maybe longer if I check the fluid level ?

Yeah, you ought to be able to keep riding, though I'd get an appointment at your dealer's as one never knows how quickly a leaking seal can fail altogether.

It may not be a seal, it could be the diaphragm that is between the CARC and the rest of the swing arm. If that is the source, you should be able to clean and use a little sealant to stop the leak. Once the CARC is removed, look at the input shaft, it there is oil there, it is probably a seal, if it is lower, then the diaphragm is suspect.

Thanks for the replies!

I'd love to be able to get in there myself but the Goose is parked in a shared underground space and I don't have to tools besides.. I'll have to track down a dealership near Frankfurt :p
