Tinny sound?

There seems to be a rattling tinny sound on most California 1400's I've come across including my own. Is this coming from the exhaust heat shields.

Perhaps. The heat shield retaining screws seem to back off a turn on mine, then stick there, allowing the shield to rattle.

Thanks for the replies fellas. I've already gone thru the cracked crossover fix with the dealer. They say the replacement is better. We'll see if it holds up. All the screws are tight with loctite and I still hear a tinny vibration or rattle when revving. But that seems common on these bikes. Even so... it's very annoying. I think my next step will be to take off the heat shields and see if that does it. Then maybe look at my options for exhaust systems with out the shields. That option has me concerned tho about passengers burning them self or melting their shoes. Does that sound like a valid concern?

Just back out the screws and put them back in with LocTite. Won't be an issue again...

Loctite doesn't hold very well where the parts get hot. Better off with a Nord washer under the bolt of the head. Unfortunately, I don't think they come in metric sizes, use a close imperial version instead.

I have ordered Todd's full GT-Rx exhaust system, to complete my upgrades. Lighter overall, stepped headers, much stronger, better performing. (I have had the GT-Rx fuelling package for a few years already - it is excellent). The heat shields are decorative more than anything. I think your boots will be safe enough.

Stephen, do you have the polished stainless finish. If so how does that look. I'm wondering if it Match's the chrome parts very well and I like chrome.

Current setup is stock headers, GT-Rx Crossover, Lafranconi Sport Mufflers. The Sport mufflers are a satin chrome version of stock, but much louder. My new GT-Rx system will be from head to tail. I will have it in a few weeks, as it is being shipped now. The photos Todd has provided show a brilliant chrome-like polish. I expect the headers will colour up somewhat, as stainless does in service. I am happy with that. The stock double wall headers tend to hold their chrome shine pretty well.

Played around with the exhaust shields a little today. I've determined they ARE the source of the tinny vibration sound. Screws are all tight but the shields still vibrate. Probably missing washers. Doesn't matter much anymore since I'll be riding to Todd's shop in Orange on Thursday to have him install the full stainless exhaust system as well as the fuel modifications. Thanks you all for your input. I think I was just looking for an excuse to do this.

"I think I was just looking for an excuse to do this."
