V7 vs Stelvio (or Bonneville) engine noise.

Coming back to this site after more than 9 years, I had then 2012 Stelvio 1200 NTX. Sold the Stelvio after one season and one of main reasons was the excessive engine noise, especially the whining transmission. I did not mind the valves train “music” but the rest was rather overwhelming and did not measure up to my previous 1200GS. Traded the Stelvio for another BMW a 2010 1200RT. Few bikes later, I am now looking for a retro style classic and narowed it down to either V7 Special or Bonneville. At my ripe age of 76, I probably will not have many more opportunities to change the bikes, so I want to get it right this time. Disadvantage for me is that I live ~450 km from nearest MG dealer and some 180 km from nearest Triumph dealer, but I have always serviced all my bikes myself.

Can anyone comment on the general noisiness of V7 vs Stelvio or Bonneville? I would really prefer a bike with shaft drive, so I am leaning towards the Guzzi.

What a shame.

You missed the very best motorcycle Moto Guzzi ever made in my opinion.

A V7/V9/V85TT is a pale shadow of the 1200 NTX.

Not even close. The Stelvio I had was a thrasher. The v7 series just music. I doubt you will adjust the valves on the Bonnie yourself.
Is there a difference in mechanical noise between V7 versions? I will be looking preferably at ii or iii, the latest ones are too heavy for me.

Well, I did not miss it, I lived with it for one (fairly hot) season, put over 10k kms on it. Maybe I had a bad copy of 1200 ntx, it was frying my knees, everything running red hot 🥵 including shaft drive and I couldn’t find ear plugs good enough to suppress the noise.

The heat is characteristic of Carcano’s 90 degree transverse V engine design.

It is EASILY rectified by simply having the exhaust headers ceramic coated. (I recommend Jet Hot Coatings. I’ve used them a few times and have been very happy with their workmanship.)

Then, 90% of the heat stays in the pipes and exits out the back, where it should.

I have a 2010 V7 Cafe with valves adjusted to 0.006" for intake and 0.008" for exhaust and in my mind there is minimal valve train clatter. Notably I have an Agostini exhaust system, which may be hiding some valve noise.

And easiest to forget until you don’t have it in place, is the fueling corrections. Power, smoothness and cooling all in one. ;)

The new version of this coating I use is called CeraKote. Developed for the military, but used commercially all over now.

Yes, exactly what I get from Jet Hot Coatings. CeraKote. The reduction in expressed heat from the headers is unbelievable. It's amazing. Also, it's very durable. My pipes look as good now, several years later, as they did the day the coated headers arrived.

Oh, and if you haven't heard about Todd's Full Monty Setup for fueling, trust me, it's the best thing you can do to your motorcycle. My Stelvio is simply amazing with it.

I have a 2014 triumph Thruxton 900, it’s a slick bike, motor is quite except for cheap mufflers, also just bought a project 2013 V7 have not ridden it yet, but it has some Agustini mufflers, sounds awesome, both are great, I’d say get both!
