valve clearances

I've gone by a less than 10 psi difference is OK. A 20 PSI difference is getting to the outer edge of acceptable. If you get to 30, I would do both sides. You would probably also notice a decline in engine balance by then anyway.

Robert, I would say 120+ is "sufficient". However the seating of the valves (with correct clearances) will make a big difference if they are set too small a gap. You may well go for a ride and test it again and get different numbers.

Still, you are approaching a time when a "top end refresh" would return some benefits. This would probably include, new rings and valve guides, gaskets etc. This would probably provide a world of difference.

I would not panic at this stage, but keep an eye on it.

Instead of replacing valve guides, I prefer having the guides renewed with K-line inserts. No chance of deforming the head where the guide is inserted.

Thanks Gents. All good info. I intend to to keep riding it for a while and when the issue worsens, I'll have it professionally done. I will keep my eye on it for degradation.

John, I'll keep your suggestion in mind when the time comes. Tony, I have ridden the bike prior to testing the compression (about 150kms), so I think the results I have aren't going to change much.

Again, thanks for the help, it makes a world of difference in deciding whether to panic or not. FYI - not.

Robert
